Submerged Biological Reactors
The Howden SBR (Submerged Biological Reactor) combines key features of fixed film and extended aeration reactors in a very effective yet simple design. The range is ideally for customers, such as small communities, caravan parks, works sites, etc, requiring a high standard of treatment from a process which is particularly easy to manage and maintain.

Primary zones in a SBR retain settleable solids in sewage and recycled sludge liquor, and also trap floating contaminants (rags, bags, fats, grease, etc). This eliminates the need for inlet works or screening equipment. Biological treatment is well catered for in a two pass down flow and up flow aerated media reactor system. These twin reactors provide an extensive surface area for growth of biomass which is essential to the process. Biomass is established and supported by oxygen in air which is introduced via diffusers. The selection of high voidage media and appropriate air distribution components ensures the system remains free of any blockage.

Clarification is achieved in a settling zone where sludge is induced to concentrate in a hopper base allowing clear liquor to rise to a surface collection system. The sludge liquor is recycled on timer controlled airlift back to the primary zones. A sterilization/contact tank completes the treatment process.

The SBR is designed to run with just on to rotating assembly – a blower set which provides air for reactors and also for the airlift. The blower and controls are located externally for easy access and diffusers can be checked and even handled without stopping the process.

Final effluent quality is in line with standards as generally sought by local and international authorities
